The cheapest way to get to Machu Picchu that includes a spectacular bus ride and a little hike: instead of taking the expensive train, you travel by bus through the Sacred Valley of the Incas and the jungle region until Hidroelectrica.
2 Days 1 Night Machu Picchu Tour By Bus From Cusco
2D1N Machu Picchu Bus Tour From Cusco
We pick you up in the morning at around 8:00 am. With a small van and other fellow travelers you start the journey to Machu Picchu, enjoying the amazing views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas before making your way up to Abra Malaga, a high mountain pass at an elevation of 3250m. From Abra Malaga, the trip continues down the narrow curvy road into the high jungle region. You pass the small jungle village of Santa Maria, passing fruit and coffee plantations, until arriving in Santa Teresa where you enjoy a lunch menu in a local restaurant (included). From there, the journey continues another 1.5 hours drive to the hydroelectric power station Hidroeléctrica – the end of the road. Then, you get off the bus and can get some snacks before starting your short hike to Machu Picchu town (Aguas Calientes), following the train track and river. Along the way you pass several bridges, can take a dip in the river and grab some fruits such as avocado, banana or oranges. Arriving to Aguas Calientes, you check in at your hostel and have the rest of the day to relax or visit the nearby hot springs (entrance 10 Soles). In the evening, you will have a briefing with your guide about the next day and can enjoy a delicious dinner at our partner restaurant Palate Bistro.
Early in the morning, you start hiking up for approx. 1.5 hours to the entrance of Machu Picchu (breakfast at your hostel will be served at 4:30am). Optional you can take the first bus up at 5:30am (US$ 12.00, however, you will have to line up at least one hour before). You will meet your guide and the rest of the group at the entrance for a 2 Hour guided tour through the Inca city, showing you the most important attractions of the Inca City. After the tour you have another 3 hours to explore Machu Picchu on your own. At around 11:30 am you should make your way down to return to Hidroeléctrica, where the driver will be waiting for you to return to Cusco (bus departs at 2:30pm). This time there will be no stop for lunch or dinner, so make sure to bring enough snacks and water. You arrive to Cusco at around 8:30 pm, the bus will drop you off at Plaza Regocijo in the city center. To get to your hostel you can either walk or take a taxi, there are always plenty of safe taxis around (cost approx. 5 Soles).
Please note: We recommend staying another night at Aguas Calientes to have enough time for your visit of Machu Picchu – there is much to see and to do! If you want to visit Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu Mountain, this is only possible with the 3 day 2 night’s package.
Another option is to take the train back from Machu Picchu to Cusco, as trains leave until late in the evening. The train ride will be until Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley of the Incas and takes only 1,5 hours. From Ollantaytambo we organize a transfer back to Cusco center.
